Chapter Seven

It was evening of the next day that Stephen and Daryl found themselves bringing the tent out again. They’d packed it up first thing after a hasty breakfast and set off through the forest. They’d followed the river for the better part of the morning, diverting only twice when the path became impassable due to the river weeds that choked some of the banks, and then again for the better part of the afternoon. They were back on it now, in another clearing, the tent set up under the canopy of two large trees and the camping stove ready to be lit.

It had been a hard day and Stephen was aching slightly from the hike. They’d stopped only twice, once mid-morning and once in the afternoon for lunch. Daryl had pushed them hard, though Stephen didn’t know if he usually did that. If every omega that joined his pack undertook such a difficult hike. But then, the other male had seemed oddly tense all day, barely speaking beyond asking if Stephen was okay, barely pausing unless he had to. Stephen wasn’t quite sure what to make of it, but then, everything was new to him and for all intents and purposes Daryl was still a stranger.

Only he doesn’t feel that way.

He looked up from where he sat on the river bank. Daryl was pulling the cooking equipment out of one of packs. He’d changed his tee so now he wore a faded black one. Stephen could see the tattoos that decorated his arms peeking below the sleeves. They looked like tribal art and Stephen would have liked to ask what they represented. He didn’t though because Daryl glanced up at that exact moment, noticed Stephen looking at him, and shot him a quick smile.

Stephen swallowed against his suddenly dry throat as he smiled back. Ever since Daryl had announced that Stephen’s mate to be was the alpha of his new pack Stephen had been struggling to deal with it. Yes, he could accept being fucked and bred by someone, that wasn’t an issue, not if it meant that he and Maggie got to start a new life together. But the idea of the alpha being the one to do it...

Stephen did not have a good feeling about that. He knew it was because to him an alpha represented something distant and frightening. Someone who pretty much banished him and his mother. But then on top of that was the fact, and there was no denying this, that Stephen was attracted to Daryl. There was something between them, and inexperienced Stephen might be, he knew it. Why else would Daryl have patted his thigh then growled? Why else did he jerk off a few feet from their tent? Stephen had heard every second of that moment of self-pleasure and had only just stopped himself from doing the same. Because he was aroused. Because Daryl aroused him, and Stephen was pretty damn sure the feeling was mutual. And so, the idea
